Hi
I wonder if someone could shed some light on this matter for me? I want to setup VPN access on my VPS, mainly to connect to other VPN hosts, but also to connect to from our offices. I see mentioning about the VPN howto in the knowledge base.
What is your experiences with VPN. How secure is it? How stable is it? How resource intensive is it, especially on a VPS-2 account?
I have never setup a VPN before, so this will be my first, but I want to make sure I won't break anything :)

What services specifically are you hoping to use within your VPN? I often find SSH with port forwarding works nicely without the mess of a VPN.

Well, I noticed that the backup options in WHM only has FTP, and not sftp / scp, thus I'm thinking of setting up a VPN between my server and my offsite backup server. Unless there's a way to use the backup with SSH port forwarding, neither of which I know how to setup at this stage, but the VPN seems best?

I'm using OpenVPN for 6 months. It works nicely, no problems. I closed all but basic ports on my VPS and using OpenVPN for unlimited access (webmin, mysql...). I have OpenVPN installed on few machines (few Samba server) and never problems. Try it, you will not be sorry. Just do regular updates.

How do you manage that? I haven't setup VPN before, and when trying to follow the howto on the knowledge base, I got some errors. I'll have to look into it at some stage again if I got some time. How much resources does it use?

I did not pay attention on resources. I would recommend you to do some reading before you start. Check openvpn.net for installation instructions and details.

It ended up that I needed to have the tun device installed by Support. It doesn't seem like it's using too much resources, but then again I've only been using it for a few minutes, will monitor it over some time. Thank you for your input :)
Hey,
I was able to get OpenVPN compiled and I got the binary all ready + the key generated, but how can I actually use this? I am very interested in checking this out!
Thanks!
