Maybe they've been motivated by ModernBill's upcoming v5. :-) Haven't checked in awhile but last I saw it was in RC stage.
CE is a baby compared to modernbill...
CE will be less than a baby when v5 will be out...

You can have a mb license for not a lot of money these days...
See http://www.mblicenses.com/
11.35$ per month if you have less than 50 customers... ( if you have more and you are still on CE ... i feel the pain for you! :) I had 25 on CE and it was the hell everymonth! )

I just break even on hosting right now, so I dont want to spend an extra 10 a month just yet, I used it for a while when I started hosting but my clients never flowed in like I wanted too, so I switched to CE, then noticed PVPS offered it for free and couldnt resist...It is awesome though..
yeah, i know what you mean, the free CE was a good point why i choose pvps...
i was with phpcoin before... if ce was the hell everymonth, phpcoin was the apocalypse every month...
At least, i didn't had many customers... and i was on a 15$/month vps, it wasn't serious anyway ;)

They're going to release a new version within 48 hours of anyone upgrading anyway. =P

No Joke! I'm still on 2.7.1. I'll wait for 2.8.0.

Lol, no doubt! Mine is working so I think I'll leave well enough alone.

Wouldn't it be nice if CE could auto upgrade..... Or if PVPS could supply a free MB lic. instead?
Robert

Free MB won't happen. lol.
MB folks made that clear. :)
There is still some talk about the possibility of doing this. There is nothing firm either way, but it's something that is discussed from time to time.

What? You're meaning to tell me you're getting the CE licences for free??? interesting.....
I thought that you purchase them, as part of the package? Which is why a MB licence would be nice instead of a CE one :)

Those of us who have made modifications to the signup area, invoice pdf, etc. have to import these changes every time we update.
and it's a pain when you translated hard coded text... There's a lot of text directly in the php and not in the translation file... it's a pain! All my customers are french speaking ... it's unprofesionnal with invoice instead of "facture" ... or "due date", etc, etc...
but, in my case, i don't update anymore... i don't use it except for some customers that don't even access the clientexec... i moved everyone to mb ...

We also use MB for our main hosting, but my wife started her own thing now, targettting a whole different market, and I though, since I have the CE lic. - why not use it :)
I think CE is a slow running company, with an unprofessional approach to be honest... when you compare them to ModernBill it seems like a joke. CE needs to get their act together!!
What do you all think of the new pricing for ModernBill V5!? - I think that's a joke...

I think both ModernBIll and CE are a joke, tbh.
www.ubersmith.com is the way ;-)

what are you judging popularity by? Lots of larger, more corporate firms use UberSmith.
But yes, UberSmith is probably the best out there.

It's supported...and it's been stated several times on their site / forum.

There is a new kid (http://www.easyams.com/forums/) coming to the block.
It is still being developed and not even in beta yet (they are looking for testers (http://www.easyams.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2) with a carrot of a free licence).
Looking over the screenshots (http://www.easyams.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7) and at some of the features (http://www.easyams.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1) it might be a refreshing addition to the CE (http://www.clientexec.com/newsite/wordpress/) / MB (http://www.moderngigabyte.com/modernbill/index.htm) combo.
Only time will tell of course. ;)
