I'm looking for opinions on what you'd find acceptable for windows vps server reboots to keep the server operating optimally, and solve any issues we may have (like someone not being able to access their VPS). Please use the poll.

Is this maintenance schedule needed for the final windows vps virtuozzo package? Or only during the beta test?

Just a general question but I mean anytime. I certainly hope it's not necessary once its final, but it's windows :)

I'm interested in opinions either way :)

I would hope you wouldnt need to reboot the server more than weekly to keep it running top notch. But, considering this is windows :D, you have to do whatever you have to do to keep it running. I know for our websites we have at a major local isp where we have our own dedicated t1 line we rarely reboot the system. Of course we aren't pushing our resource utizliation to the max with heavy load and bandwidth usage, so I guess it really doesn't count.

Thanks

I think it's becoming clear that weekly would be tolerated, but let me rephrase the question just to be clear.

*IF* it becomes necessary to have to reboot the server periodically to keep all customers happy, what frequency would be acceptable to you. Or whats the threshold where you say "forget this, i can't have a reboot every X" on my server, windows or not?

I would have to say that anymore than once a week might be a burden on your "client's clients" You never know who is connecting from where or what type of sleep schedule people have. You could speculate that a reboot every day at 4am would be fine but then you have to wonder in which timezone. 4am for one would be peak 11am for another.

Since I am in the U.S. and probably most of your VPS clients would be in the U.S. and probably most of the client's clients would be in the U.S. this would likely not be a big deal for most of us. But my only problem is about ticking off my clients that have the weird sleep schedule. So I might be able to handle once per day but if it I started to get complaints then I would have to push to have you put my VPS on a machine that didnt need as many reboots because it was not as loaded or I would be forced to look for other hosting as I am sure you would understand.

Don't worry, I don't think it would ever be needed, and we certainly wouldn't go live with it if it was :) Just curious mainly as I don't use windows much myself and don't think weekly is acceptable personaly.

Oh, and a large portion of our customers are not from the US, believe it or not.

Ah ok. I agree our 2003 servers run fine at our isp without reboot for weeks at a time. The only time we reboot is if we have to reboot from a patch which happens infrequently. I did have to reboot recently but it was because of an update where a dll was in use and not cleared out by iis correctly. Would prefer a reboot on an occassional month, like once every two months.

Would seem to me that if the problem cant be cleared by anything other than a reboot then it would be because of how the software was written. So you kinda have to live with whatever you get from the manufacturer unless you take the stand that you arent going to offer plesk on windows :). Which doesnt really seem like a nice idea to me =D

Well this is Windows and all but still I've seen Windows servers running for weeks without being reboot. I think once a week is not acceptable, maybe once a month at the most. Just my opinion.
