I would be interested as an admin figuring out how to get VPN configured and working on the system. This would allow me to make my connection securely and connection with SQL Enterprise Manager, a tool that doesnt really encrypt the data it sends back and forth.

I may try to get this to work in the next few days. If someone else has tried to do this please give your feedback here. I would like to hear about it.

We have not tried this on the Windows platform, only using OpenVPN.org on the linux VPS', please let us know if anyone gets this working and we can create a KB article out of it.

I tried to work on this a few minutes ago and could not get the Routing and Remote Access service to start. Was throwing some weird error. On my server that actually has Windows 2003 Enterprise (Full Server) I installed and started the service no problem. Not sure what is going on but I will try again this weekend.

Well I finally got around to trying to get VPN working. I did on my personal 2003 server fine that sits on the internet and I could log into it fine as well and fully setup the VPN. I am about to try it again on my plesk system as soon as they reboot it so I can get back into remote desktop. I would reboot it myself but I tried to log into the control panel too many times and locked myself out. :D

Well no luck I finally get in. The Windows PLESK will not let you even start the Routing and Remote Access Service. It should be possible but it just will not start.

If you can send us the specific steps you took , and the exact error message, we can look into this and ask SWSoft.

thanks
charles

ICS Service must be disabled in the control panel to perform the install...

Manager your server wizard...

Add role Remote Access / VPN Server

When the RRAS Service tries to start it fails and puts this message in the event log...

Unable to load C:\WINDOWS\System32\iprtrmgr.dll.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Is the verdict on this that the Windows Firewall must be disabled for RRAS to work?

Hi there,

This topic was started almost a year ago while we were still offering Virtuozzo-based Windows VPS. It's not applicable with the MSVS-based systems. Ultimately Virtuozzo for Windows did not support VPNs. It could not handle the virtual adapter properly.

You should not need to disable the Windows firewall (you may need to open ports). In fact, I personally highly recommend AGAINST totally disabling your firewall as it does protect you from quite a bit.

In playing with my MSVS VPS though, I discovered the same issue - RRAS and the Windows Firewall do not seem to want to co-exist. If I want to establish a VPN to my VPS, what is the best way to do so?
