View Full Version : Linux knowledge needed for VPS?

I have a reseller account on another host with 10/20 domains and am thinking of moving. I am looking at a VPS plan with the Easy Start option. My question is, do I need to know any Linux in order to use this plan? I am concerned that I will be jumping in without a net and my sites will suffer. Is the VPS administration something that I can pick up along the way?

Thanks for any response.

I had the same concern but it did not take long after I signed up to realize that this is an excellent company that puts client support at the top of there list.

You may be able to find a cheaper VPS solution but that's OK if you are not worried about the support.

Furthermore, the fact that they are located in a Equinix.com datacenter means a lot.

I signed up last Monday and I am now able to slowly transfer some clienst over with the WHM transfer utility wich works great between two CPANEL hosting servers.

I must admit though that it has been a busy week :)

Hi Kevin

As far as getting your sites switched over and up and running, no problems and you'll find it no different than being a reseller.

Long term, you'll need to learn the additional features you'll now have available to you through WHM, and how the maintain your VPS.

I believe the leap from a reseller to a VPS is not that bad for a seasoned reseller, and the combination of our initial configuration and security steps, panel updates, and our support whenever you need it, can make this a safe a painless process.

Please note that cpanel does the best job of keeping itself as well as core OS components updated. It will be more work (and therefore harder) with plesk, directadmin, webmin, in that order.

Thanks for the replies. I use Cpanel and WHM where I am now so a lot would be the same here, there would, I assume, just be more options. I was concerned I needed to do Linus line commands right off the bat and I have no business trying that at this point. :D But I might also get a Windows VPS as I do use Server 2003 and that would be a good way to add to my knowledge of that OS.

Is there a realtime display of server status, loads, and also history of downtime available? I have tried for two days on the virtualprivateserver.info link on the PowerVPS "About Us" page and it will not come up for me.

Another question I have concerns email. As a reseller, all accounts on the server send email from the same IP address - so when one user gets blacklisted, the whole server suffers.

Does this work the same in the VPS solution or does the partitioning also apply to email, i.e. if one VPS account gets blacklisted does it also affect all the other VPS accounts?

Thanks!

Feel free to contact support if you ever need help with anything.

I apologize for the virtualprivateserver.info link - I have removed it. We discontinued the use of it.

You can use a combination of WHM and the power panel to see your VPS load and uptime history.

We have zero tollerence for SPAM. If we get a spam report, we *will* take action. One abuser can get an entire address block blacklisted. This is no different from any other environment i am afraid.

Thank you Charles, for your prompt reply.

So long as you do not tolerate spam and work to keep the servers from being blacklisted, that is all I can ask for...

We generally will have most abuse reports investigated within a few hours of notification. All of our support techs monitor the abuse reports and are able to investigate/take action on them.

We're VERY protective of our IP blocks. They're your sites... but they're also our paychecks. hehe. None of us want to see the IPs blacklisted. :)
