Hello All,
I signed up tonight after several weeks of shopping around. Have heard nothing but good about PowerVPS and am very pleased with my experience so far. Everything was setup very quickly - thanks PowerVPS.
I'm happy to be a new member and am looking forward to participating in your community here.
Cheers,
eric a.

I'd like to say that I've been VERY impressed with the Sales and Service support so far from PowerVPS - I've entered several tickets and sent more than my share of emails and they've all been responded to very quickly and professionally. Even placed a presales phone call and it was responded to within minutes. Thanks again!

Howdy from Montana, sewmyheadon. :D
You sound familiar too. LOL
I didn't know you were in Seattle tho. I used to live in that area. Eastside and then Arlington for many years.
Welcome to a great company. They have been nothing but EXCELLENT to this old and slow guy. ;)

And capnqwest, I don't believe we met on the other host. But, Howdy anyways. ;)

Only place in the U.S. I'd want to live. What part of Seattle?

Sorry, I did not mean to Seattle, I meant to PowerVPS from the other host we 4 seem to have in common...

I recognized you too, KevinK! Wow, it's like a reunion. Interested in hearing why you migrated (maybe by PM) and how you like it here so far.

I'm on a roll - just purchased VPS #2. Can't say enough about the speed and friendliness of the service - thanks guys for all of the help.
Also started moving accounts off another server at a different host, who also uses WHM/CPanel and it was super easy. I don't have SSH priviledges there so I used the login/password feature and it worked like a charm.
So far three domains and no problems to speak of, really. One little email glitch, which was my own oversight, which I'd be happy to explain to other refugees from the other host.

I used the WHM wizard also and it was marvelous.

Yep, I was shocked - I'm just a tech skeptic sometimes and am so flabbergasted when things work so well on the first try. I'll be migrating more of my accounts over this weekend and the balance over the next few weeks, most likely.

Yeah, I've been contacted by three other customers of the host we all have in common and they are switching after I gave them a demo of WHMs transfer features. I too was floored and non-believing when I saw it successfully transfer a 400 mb site while I was on a conference call.
The other members were holding off migrating because they thought transferring would be so painful. They had no idea WHM had so many cool features that we were locked out of by that other host!

I don't doubt it. I had an overall good experience there (much better than some other places) but it's clear to me that it's time to move on. I've already closed a few domains down there after an easy and successful move to one of my VPS accounts here.
I ordered my second VPS here today and it was configured in record time - I wasn't even in a rush and they still had it setup within two hours, DNS synced between the two servers, allowed me to name them what I wanted, and put up with my almost endless onslaught of questions always addressing each item and not making me feel like I'm imposing.
Looking at the value of the whole deal, I paid ~$35/month at my last host for 2GB/40GB and for ten bucks more, get a much sweeter plan with tons more space, bandwidth and features and I'm not so limited. Heck, the extra support here is worth the dough to me, plus I now have the opportunity to learn more about hosting, which I'm somewhat green at, but love.
One of the things I really wanted for so long at my last host was the ability to offer VirusScan on the server. This is very important to a few customers of mine, so I harped on this at my last host and always received an 'it's on the table' sort of reply. In the meantime, I paid another company $25/month to outsource email for two domains. Here, I can install ClamAV, I can run more than 1000 emails per day, per domain for a select few clients who require it, and did I mention the support is great?
I'm not really sure (need to do some reading) on what all gets moved with the WHM "Copy an account from another server with account password" function. I have a few sites that run things like ClientExec and Invision Power Board and I don't want to mess anything up. I'm actually thinking these things may migrate fine after DNS is changed and propagates.
I had worried that I'd lose historical site traffic data from AWStats, but that seems to move fine.
Well, off to do some reading at CPanel.net . . . or get some sleep.

I'm glad to hear the move and the setup went well. :)
CPanel's server-to-server transfers backup all account related data, including stats info, mysql databases, e-mail accounts, ftp accounts, etc.
If you ever manually needed to move CPanel's AWStats data... just go into the /home/USERNAME/tmp/awstats folder and move the contents there to the new server in the same folder location. That will restore your stats data on the new server.

Rob,
Thanks a bunch for the info. I think both ClientExec and Invision's licenses are tied to the domain that their installed on, so I'm assuming if I transfer the whole account over, they'll be fine once DNS propagates - do you have any experience with this? I can head over to their forums for more research.

Welcome Aboard Kevin - :) Listen to me - speaking like an old-timer. I've been here for less than a week now, and am still getting my bearings, but am very glad to see other good folks that I'm somewhat familiar with from other places signup here - makes me feel a bit more at ease with the transition.
Kudos to PowerVPS for providing products and service that are worthy of the switch. I'm confident that if they get busy enough, quickly enough, they'll handle it well.

So when you copy with username/password, you do not set the account up here first? It transfers everything over automatically? If so, this will be much easier than what I just went through transfering to another server over there...

Hi Kevin, no you don't need to set it up in WHM here first. Just put in the info for your httpme server and copy. Part of the transfer script sets up the account on your VPS after the data has been successfully transfered here. It WILL be easier than any transfer you've ever done before...
sewmyheadon
06-05-2005, 12:11 AM
Yep, the transfer is extremely simple. I've already brought over eight or ten accounts with no real problems.
My one little issue was this:
I only had one reseller account at the other host, so started by transferring a test account first from there, which was, of course, on the same server that my main hosting account and email were on.
After the transfer and DNS propagation had gone through, I sent test emails to an email address at my test account and it never made it to the new server since the accounts still existed on the other server and were considered local.
I'm sure I could have modified DNS settings on the old server. Or, I think there's a feature within WHM to mark the account as non-local, but it is disabled on the other host's WHM panel, so I could either request it through a support ticket, or just test the account after the transfer, verify DNS propagation using dnstools.com or mob.net and then have it deleted from the old server.
The owner of the other host doesn't seem too happy about it, but . . . ya gotta do what ya gotta do, no?

Well, here I am, another one from your old host.
I'm starting off slow, and the only glitch I ran into is when I did a
"Copy an account from another server with account password"
I migrated an account with a Monsoon theme. Had me flustered that I couldn't get into the new Cpanel. Then I noticed Monsoon, and changed it to x. Now it works!!
Even the email works. I'm pretty much blown away.

It is kinda funny though considering the size of the hosting universe, how many of us from that old host ended up here independently and right around the same time. I'm still getting PMs at the old hosts forums asking where I went and I'm sending them here.

I shopped around on WHT and read very positive info about PowerVPS. Actually even got a recommendation here from one of their competitors (who wasn't as highly regarded on WHT).
I decided on PowerVPS because of the responsiveness of Sales Support and the fact that they offer more managed services. I emailed three different VPS companies asking a variety of questions and Charles answered all of my questions about 100 times faster than either of the other companies and more completely.
I'd looked at unmanaged services too, but am still a relative newbie with the workings of Linux, so wanted to make sure I could get help when needed without paying through the schnoz.
Glad I'm here.
