Hi to all,

I wonder if someone could tell me the roadmap for the Virtuozzo/FC upgrade. With the advent of the new release of FC4, I'd say that FC2 will become either unsupported or not fully supported by the community in a relatively short period of time. I also understand that Virtuozzo has his software prime time ready for the 2.6 kernels.

Due to the fact that I do not necessarily need a CP to operate since all my work is done in python/zope (i.e. from the CLI), I'd definitely benefit from the 2.6 kernel shall it become available in this nice company,

Regards,

Hi

We are very much contrained by the Virtuozzo technology when it comes to upgrades. First, the virtuosso kernel (which is shared by all VPS regardless of the OS used) is currently 2.4 only. Don't expect that to change for the next 4-6months at the earliest. Given this, they wont be supporting any OS versions that don't run a 2.4 kernel.

The next issue is the OS template itself. In theory we could make our own, but we prefer to use the tested/stable templates provided by SWSoft. Again we are limited to whats available.

Lastly, the software templates available affect which OS we support. For example, a centos 3 OS template is available now but not all the software templates we currently use. We expect this to change soon, and we'll start offerign centos 3 (but thats 2.4 as well).

So in short, expect another 6 months before were going to be using a 2.6 kernel on the VPS.

Understood,
Nevertheless, I must admit that it is not only software that counts, reliability of the systems and commitment to service is what keeps many of us here. Fedora Core has proven to be a solid and stable platform anyway so I will patiently wait for the transition if it happens.

Thanks

I'm honestly not trying to downplay the issue ( i would like to keep as current as possible) but if you think about the following points, I think you'll agree that the version of the OS your running really doesn't matter as much as you think, and security should be the driving factor (as it is for us).

1. Your using the same virtuosso kernel regardless if you had redhat-9/fedora-core1/fedora-core2/debian/centos3

2. If your using a panel, the panels all have the same revs, and most even keep the same revs on all major components like http/mail/ftp

So whats left is probably not a whole lot you care about (outside of security). We can still keep our redhat-9 installs as current and secure as our fedora-core2 installs.
