I am having FTP issues - when I try and send files FTP, it just hangs. I have tried both with passive mode on and off. Is there somewhere that I can look to see if there are errors on the VPS side in order to see if the problems are at the source (here) or at the destination (VPS)?

I have also tried several FTP clients. Eventually, I can get the files to send, it just does not work right away when I want it to. :(

It sounds like a issue with passive ftp and the firewall. If you submit a ticket to support they can help you resolve this.

If anyone is interested, I believe this is an issue with something Microsoft recently updated as part of an automatic update in XP. It works MOST of the time if I turn off the XP firewall. I am going to load another XP system and stop it from updating and see if it works prior to SP2+.

By the way, I did submit a ticket and Veena tested out that end for me (thanks Veena!) and found no issues.

INteresting. What firewall are you using? I have Sygate personal and I use a few different FTP's. No problems. But, I haven't updated to SP2 yet. Every time I think about it someone comes up with a different issue. ;)

What I found is that you either need to go to passive mode in the FTP client or open some more ports. Opening the additional ports seems to me to defeat the purpose of the firewall.

Update:

I built a new system with Windows XP SP1. Have not yet applied any updates, just built from the CD. FTP flies with this system. Across the room at the computer with SP2 and all updates, it is much slower and I have had to turn off the XP firewall to get it to work at all.

I am going to start applying updates and see when it "breaks."

Kevin,

Please update again when you have updated XP - I've suspected that the more patches 'updates' I apply to my XP system, the slower it seems to operate. Does that mean it's time to switch to Linux?. ;)

I've got a Fedora system up and running too for learning purposes and can envision making the switch totally in the future, but not quite yet. Kinda like quitting smoking, I suppose . . . you tell yourself you need to stop, but easily find excuses to wait 'til tomorrow.

Quick update - finally got back to this...

First, with just SP1 and ZERO updates installed, I tested FTP using FTPCommander. Ran fine for 30+ minutes.

Then, I let XP install the first batch of updates automatically - there were 26 of them. Immediately, FTP freezes when I try and FTP the same files from the same computer to the same folder using the same FTP client.

I am now uninstalling all 26 updates and will reinstall one at a time, to try and isolate the problem area.

Fred,

It is not a 100% problem. It can happen that you can send a bunch of files and no problems will occur. Then, all of a sudden it is not possible to send any files at all. Generally restarting the application and/or the computer will allow FTPing to occur again. But when having to send an entire web site, I would like to knnow it is not going to freeze in the middle of sending and leave files with 0 bytes at the other end...

Yea, i have been having these issues.

What i have been doing is this.

Using filezilla
make sure you have it on overwrite, and let it go through, it will usually get all of them through, because filezilla will keep trying until it does it successfully.

I was uploading clientexec through ftp, and did that same thing, and one file was still in the queue after i was done, i right clicked on it and restarted that one file. Clientexec works fine on the server, seems to have had no errors. well just a suggestion, and proceed at your own risk.

:)
If you need the FTP client, you can usually just google it. if you cant find it, PM me.

Regards,
Joshua

Okay, I know it has been months since I wrote this but I ended up having to use my test computer for another use and never got around to finishing installing XP "fixes" one-by-one (anyhow there are too many).

So the other day FTP got stuck again (on FTPCommander) and again I went in and changed a bunch of things, no go. Then I found that the FTP had set the type of computer to "UNIX,BSD,WU-FTP server". I changed that to "default" and have not had any problems since. I did end up turning off my XP Firewall too for another issue I have with classroom/lab software - so it might be a combination of things. Or it could be that since I wrote this stating that the problem is solved . . . the problems will probably come back to haunt me tomorrow...

Cheers!

Hate to say this, but I have been using Windows XP and have had no issues with FTP.
I've used XP without SP1 when it wasnt there, used with SP1 when it was released, used with SP2 when it got released too.
Only thing I make sure is to update Windows completely immediately after finishing the installation of the OS. By doing this the most difficult part (updating the buggiest software of ur system i.e. Windows) is over before starting installation of other applications and the drivers for the hardware.
Another thing, try out miFiles FTP client (http://www.simdata.com.au/downloads/miFiles112d.zip), its a freeware and its very light compared to most other popular FTP clients...i prefer using it for more than a year now.

You can say it, I believe you. This problem just seems to crop up from time to time - and is an annoyance. Search on FTP and XP in google and you will see others who have issues as well. I am running with a completely updated Windows XP, have tried numerous FTP clients (most freeware), have tried on many different boxes, etc etc. Whatever it is, it is quite hard to pin down. Consider yourself lucky that you have not had any issues...
