First off, this isn't a whinge at support. The support team at PowerVPS have always been top notch when dealing with my queries. What is working against me at the moment is my understanding of web server stuff and the time difference.
I've put off upgrading some software on my server for quite a while as it needed MySQL v4 and PHP v5. Recently we've had a request for another piece of software that doesn't have a version that supports MySQL v3 and PHP v4 (my current setup)
So I decided to bite the bullet knowing that I could ask the support guys to do the install for me, and that they would do the best they can to get it done. I also appreciate it's certainly not an urgent request at all. Far from it.
I know very little about upgrading my VPS account, hence why I rely on the support techs. The upgrade of MySQL went quickly and easily, thanks to Will and other members of the team I'm sure. However the upgrade of PHP is not going so well.
Due to the setup of the VPS, Plesk 7.5.4 on Fedora Core 2 I was unable to have PHP 5.2.5 according to Millind. The latest version available to me was 5.0.4 - fine, I didn't fancy the idea of having to move all my accounts to another VPS.
Here's the problem, in this conversation it was at times taking upto 7 hours between question and answer. At one point, after stating twice that I wanted PHP 5.0.4 seven hours later with no response I was asked confirm that I wanted PHP 5.0.4 - it just takes a long time to get anywhere. At the start of the ticket posts where flying around every few minutes (which was much better than I expected) - now it's going oh so slow. I guess there are other more important tasks to do - which is fine, I understand.
However, it now appears that I can't have PHP 5.0.4, yet Parrallels says it is possible. I don't want to push you guys into doing something you don't support, and if PHP 5 on the setup I have isn't supported then fine. If it *can* be done though I'd be forever grateful.
If it isn't supported what do I do? The whole idea of moving all the accounts off the server, moving IP address, reloading accounts onto a new VPS scares me slightly. So much can go wrong and I'd probably end up relying on the support team to do as much as they can. As I say my knowledge of web server stuff is limited.
What do people recommend? Can PHP 5.0.4 site on Plesk 7.5.4 or is it the Fedora Core 2 that's knocking it out. Do I need a new account? Is there a better way?
