What operating system do you use on your main PC and why?

My main box is WinXP *looks bashfully at the floor*, but I'm brushing up on my Linux skills with another test machine using Fedora Core 2.

I mix it up between OS X and XP, depending on the job.

ornate-ebola - my main box - runs a slightly de-ubuntu'd version of Hoary.

cania - general slave to my whims - runs FreeBSD 5.3

KHAMELEON - Windows XP 2002 (XP sans SP2)

There are a couple more in the pipeline, just haven't had time to get them set up and O/S's installed.

Linux on the desktop as it does everything I need and anything it doesn't I can change to my liking.

Mac OS X on my powerbook. Thought I'd give it a try (perfect marriage of a real OS underneath and a pretty face on the pig) and love it except its dog slow.

Charles, what flavor of Linux do you use? I installed FedoraCore2 because it's what you use here and I've read great things about it. In the past I've used a few different versions of Mandrake (now Mandriva).

Also, is the speed problem on your Mac powerbook and inherent problem, or is it a slow machine to begin with?

I really dont do anything other than work so my desktops are like glorified xterms - i could run anything as long as its stable :). I happen to have FC1 on my home office desktop and FC3 on the office one. I occasionaly try different distros liek gentoo, ubuntu, knoppix etc but none have wooed me enough to switch from redhat based distros.

I am not sure about the problems with the G4. I haven't had tme to do a clean OS install but it could be that or the choice of apps I run (all the main ones are open source) or i have a lemon. I am a power user though so I could just be expecting too much out of a 1.x ghz risk chip :).

1 Machine only

1st Hard Disk Windows HP Home
I need it for two main reasons:
1) I study Mech Enginering and i need software that exists only for win :(
2) I love PC wargame, Combat Simulation and strategic videogame. They are only for win, you know. :(

2nd Hard Disk
Suse 9.3 ( main distro )
Fedora Core 3 ( only to train a little bit RPM by shell )
Simply Mepis 3.3.1 ( only to train a little bit apt-get by shell )

Howdy,

Fedora Core 3 on a P4 2.8 1Gb RAM as my main desktop, and a Mac Mini 1.42/512Mb, OSX 10.4.1, and yes, people can *really* live without windows :)

Cheers,

As a side point, apt4rpm is great for suse, and will let you get rid of the Mepis installation ;-)

Having said that... Lizard Linux does fall pretty low on the list of decent Distros. lol :p

Windows XP and can't wait to get OS X on an Intel platform, but wish it would run on an AMD Opteron!

I have to use Windows at work, but don't find it necessary or cost effective at home. I've been through most of the major distros out there since I started using Linux in 1998. First install was Redhat 5.2 that came with a Linux book. Linux has really grown up since then. Since 2003 I've been using Gentoo, and don't plan on moving my main workstation to anything else in the foreseeable future. I like some of what Ubuntu is doing, so I use it on my laptop.

Primary home workstation: Gentoo, 2.6.11-gentoo-r3 kernel, AMD Athlon 2500+, 1GB RAM
Laptop: Ubuntu Hoary, PIII, 196MB RAM
Wife's workstation: Win XP Pro SP2, PII 400MHz, 384MB RAM

Office workstation: Win XP Pro SP2, P4 2.4 GHz, 1GB RAM
Development box: Fedora Core 2, PIII, 384MB RAM
