I've just spent the best part of about 6 hours getting this up and running (time mainly taken waiting for my ISP's DNS cache to rebuild so I could check it all worked).

It's free, and, I hope, fast.

All you need to listen to it, is a compatible audio player - xmms, winamp, etc, and to visit http://radio.deftechgroup.com and click on either Listen 64kbps for slow connections, or 128 for fast connections.

If you have requests - they won't always be played immediately, but they will get played - until I get the web submission form up and such, post them here.

I know, the page is ugly; but it's functional, and until I get a little more time, it'll stay *functional* =P

---

Props go to Kription (http://www.kription.com/) for making an excellent XML/php page for pulling stats... even though his php skills are evil.

=D

Excellant!

I've got a song uploader in the pipeline, which will, when it's done let you upload something you like for later playback. Possibly, once the backend is all moved to onto it's own server as opposed from streaming from our boxes, I'll implement a function to auto add tracks to the playlist.

I have a lot in the pipeline, just no time. lol.

If Nirvana happens to fall into your scope of blues, and you're not just meaning 60's Jazz blues, Lithium is up next.

Otherwise, hook me up with some song titles and I'll get em queued for ya.

Nirvana is ok but I'm a Memphis-bred gal...Beale St. BBKing, Clapton, etc. Most of you younger ones probably wouldn't like it much. I listen to everything though so whatcha got is cool. I really dig Lifehouse though...........:D

Good Job, if you need help with anything relating shoutcast you can always PM me. I setup some radio stations in the past and some video stations.

Thanks for the offer =)

Right now, all is good; but eventually, if enough people start listening to it, I'll look into clustering a couple of servers together for extra throughput. From what I've read on the subject, it shouldn't be too difficult to do.

Just use these settings on the relay server (:

; RelayPort and RelayServer specify that you want to be a relay server.
; Relay servers act as clients to another server, and rebroadcast.
; Set RelayPort to 0, RelayServer to empty, or just leave these commented
; out to disable relay mode.
RelayPort=8000
RelayServer=192.168.1.58

Tony

What about the clustered server password?

Also, am I right in thinking that you can still listen via the RelayServer, and, last but not least; can I specify multiple relay servers within one conf file, or will this b0rk things?

Hvu
06-28-2005, 09:09 PM
What you should do is set that in the your relay server NOT your host server.

We use AAC+ instead of MPEG. Its just $100 for the encoder but save thousands in bandwidth charges.

Tony
06-28-2005, 09:30 PM
The quality of AAC is kinda weird... like listening to the music in a bathtub... and it doesn't play on linux =/

I'm down with Nirvana, but you can't beat the Blues. How 'bout some Robert Johnson?

Tony
06-29-2005, 01:51 AM
I'll get some queued as soon as I've got my collection sorted out. Trying to split up 6000 files into genres is... interesting, to say the least.

Unfortunately, a lot are just dropped in random folders.

Still, I recommend mediamonkey for this!

Tony

Mmmh... just found out exactly how much non-suitable music I have - i.e. death/goth metal, grindcore, etc... I just cut my mp3s from 6000 or so down to 2500.

It should sound a little more `mainstream` now.

Robert Johnson .awesome! I love the blues! I went down to Beale St. for the Lifehouse Low Dough concert a couple of months ago. I don't know if you've ever been but there's always an old Blues musician or two out on the stoop, selling cd's, jamming a bit. Well one of those was an old Blues drummer, JJ Cool. I bet I spent an hour talking to him. We got to discussing old vs. new blues and how the music has remained the same in this area.
We'll convert ya Tony, the Blues is just contagious!
From "Drunken Hearted Man" I been dogged and I been driven
eve' since I left my mother's home

And I can't see no reason why
that I can't leave these no-goods womens alone

Heh. No conversion necessary... I love the blues, just happens that I have hardly any on KHAMELEON. I'm mass uploading the music to the server atm, which will mean even when "thunderstorms" -- their words, not mine; I was offline from about 12pm (there was no thunderstorm then) until about 4am -- hit, the music will still play. You'll then also be able to upload mp3s you want to hear directly to the server. =)

Simply a case of my listening to BBC live about the london bombings instead of streaming.

Tony, keep a machine for streaming... :) and use vnc to control it or whatever remote solution from your desktop... or else someday, we will hear something we really shouldn't hear :P

The music is not really my kind of music... ( as i read the "was played list" ). :)
I'm more like hardcore, post-hardcore ... Say Poison The Well, boyssetsfire, beloved, finch, from autumn to ashes, Hot water music, thursday ... i could continue like that for an hour :)

Heh, I have one - KHAMELEON - win xp box; eventually, it'll all stream directly off the server.

Ever heard Note to Self? They sound kinda like FATA; Anathema sortof fits into the hardcore/metal scene, but it's a little softer than the other stuff I have on there. My Dying Bride ain't bad either - has a sortof melodic feel to it. What about Kittie?

I'd play em... just you and I are probably the only people listening that would appreciate it. =P

As long as it's clear this is not an Official Defender product or service, thats fine.

I had tried to reply to this last night, roughly at the same time that the phonelines went down. =/

I've got some forums up, I'm just not linking to them yet, as they are a bit away from being ready. However, if you want to have a look - http://radio.deftechgroup.com/forums - there is one board on there atm; feel free to post comments/ideas/suggestions/etc.

Indeed, as Charles says, please make it clear that this is not Defender endorsed; it's just Tony wasting his spare time and company resources. =P

Guess I must be playing the right stuff if you want to post about it =D

The radio stream is not up - did you shut id down?

I'm interested in setting one up myself, but I'm unsure about copyright law - I assume you are not allowd to rip your own CD collection, and broadcast it as internet radio

Maybe someone can clarify this?

Tony
09-20-2005, 11:40 AM
Mmm, it hasn't been up for a while, actually.

Talk to an attorney. ;-)

The DMCA does cover an 'acceptable use'... iirc, internet streaming radio is allowed, however, i'm not a lawyer, so you shouldn't listen to a word I say about such things.

Fred
