View Full Version : Considering a move to a VPS

Hi,
I have a few questions about VPS to set my mind at ease, if anyone can help.
I consider myself technically competent, although I have next to no experience with Linux.
I know my way around cpanel pretty well, and know a fair amount about configuring PHP, apache and MySQL.
At the moment I am used to shared hosting where everything is already set up and I can concentrate on writing scripts without worrying about installing the software, tweaking it, and security issues.
My question is: just how easy (and how long will it take, approximately) to get apache, PHP (with an accelerator), MySQL, Email, FTP and whatever else I need installed and configured so I can basically "forget about it"?
I only intend to host my own domains, not resell.
Are there any tutorials that explain the best steps to go through to get all this configured? I am also concerned about security issues - are these handled by admin, or do I need to take special steps to ensure my sites don't get hacked?
I think I've just been "spoiled" by windows, and don't relish the idea of having to revert back to spaghetti command line code to get things done...
Thanks.

I presume by the above statement about cPanel that you'd be getting our cPanel Power-1 VPS. It comes completely ready to use 'out of the box' so to speak.
Also, you can always submit a ticket if you're unsure about something, or need something that you think is above your technical capabilities, and we'll be happy to get it done for you. =)

Yes, I am familiar with Cpanel, so that'd be the route I'd take.
Been reading a load of posts on here already, and I think I should be up to the task.
Does CPanel install PHP/Apache/MySQL already, or it that something I'd have to do separately?
Also, say I have several domains, can I administer them all from one central location, or would I have to set up separate CPanel logins for each one?

Do it .. you won't look back :)
Everything (PHP/Apache/MySQL/Mail/DNS/etc.) is already installed and ready to go.
FTP (or SSH) to upload/edit your files into the Apache webspace, point your domain registrar record to your PowerVPS IP (that already has DNS setup/running) ... and away you go.
Use Cpanel to create a new domain (other than the primary one you used to create your PowerVPS service) and Cpanel does eveyhting you need to do. As above, just point your doamin registrar at your PowerVPS server and upload your files
You get a root logon for your VPS where most options can be administered from the one place (eg. Mysql phpMyAdmin root logon for all databases) or use the seperate user account/logon for each domain.
As a famous sport company advertisement says .. "Just Do It" :)

You should do that anyways Charles........:D
falsedawn, these guys are great! I can't think of a single complaint and I'm going on six months I think. I tried various others and always had problems. Here support is great, the other customers are great, it's a no-lose situation!

Right - I've had permission from the better half, but there's a few more questions I'd like answering:
The cpanel power-1 comes with 2 IP numbers - what does that mean exactly? Is one used by my primary domain? What about if I want my own nameservers - will that use another?
Also, is there a limit on how many extra IP numbers I can have on this account?
Is the offer of free RVSkins and 100GB exta transfer still availiable and do I need to enter a code when ordering a plan?
Not that I expect I'll be using more than 1% of the bandwidth initially, but it's nice to have :-)
Finally, can I transfer SSL certs from other sites without problem?
Thanks.

hi,
Your site will be on the primary IP, as well as the primary nameserver. Then, th eother nameserver will be on the second IP.
I don't think there is a limit.
Yes the offer is still active as far as I know, and no there is no code you have to enter.
In my experience, you can use the same certificate, but you have to install it again. It is very simple, though.

Even if the IP changes?

hi,
Yep, I just did it a week or two ago. Here's what I did.
Transferred my site
Went to the install an ssl certificate section of whm
Type in secure.zapx.net into the domain part
It all updated, and contained the key, certificate, username, etc.
I clicked "do it"
It all works fine.

There are practical limits on the number of IPs, like cost, and at some point you'll need to show justification per ARIN rules, just like we do.
SSL Certificates are bound to domain names, not IPs so you can move them without concern.
