Hey Folks,

My name is Liam... I'm from the UK, and I've just started to use VPS, after spending hours looking, I came across the name of PowerVPS often, and decided to signup.

I was very suprized to get a call from them to confirm the signup, considering I gave an international number - therefore wasn't expecting one, and also it was midnight here so I was a little dazed. - But still, was good to get a call from them.

I have played around so far with WHM which I'm used to from being a reseller with several companies before, and still having one just in case I don't like PowerVPS... I've got a few questions to clear up, if anyone can help me...

- Can I create reseller accounts with my VPS? so I can sell packages where my customers can create packages for their customers? (basically can I sell reseller accounts).

- I have a reseller account with HostingZoom at the moment, 8gb of webspace and 120Gb bandwidth for $22.50/month - if I transfered these accounts over, would my VPS crash?... I've got about 50 customers but from what I've read and my first impressions, I feel like my VPS will just crash and cease to work.

- What do I need to do which I didn't with a reseller? - I know already how many more options I have from a standard reseller account, but what from these should I be monitering... and what features should I be used?

- What is the best thing about VPS for me?

I'm not to sure about support at the moment, as its very unclear how to get help... if I want to ask someone something where do I go? - Also, how long do I expect to be sitting here for a response?

One major thing which may not keep me here, is the ability to add to my account... can I add just extra webspace, and bandwidth? or do they only allow upgrades to the next level, if this is so... then I may have to close my account now, and find another company.

Thanks for your help... and nice to meet everyone :)
My website is - www.oxyuk.com - its under major construction at the moment, as we've just won some awards and got some major funding, so we're expanding to hosting on a larger scale (we used to only host our designed sites).
If anyones got msn add me (liam@oxyuk.com) and aol (oxyuk).

Cheers,
Liam

Hi Liam

- Can I create reseller accounts with my VPS? so I can sell packages where my customers can create packages for their customers? (basically can I sell reseller accounts).

Yes you can. VPS is just like a dedicated server and you can create as many resellers as your wish.

Have PowerVPS team transfer it for you.

- What do I need to do which I didn't with a reseller? - I know already how many more options I have from a standard reseller account, but what from these should I be monitering... and what features should I be used?

You need to take care of your VPS. Do trojan / rootkit checks every once in while. Install AntiVirus / AntiSpam. You need to monitor your server status such as system load / memory usage. You also need to monitor if services are working.

- What is the best thing about VPS for me?

Freedom, you do as you wish. You can install anything edit as you wish.

If you need help email support@powervps.com and they will help you out within 10mins. Forums could take hours as the support team doesnt visit as much as the support desk. You can add webspace and bandwidth as you wish just email support and ask for more of what you need and they'll add it in seconds.

Hi Liam

Welcome. These all seem like questions you should have asked *before* signing up, but here goes anyay.

- Can I create reseller accounts with my VPS? so I can sell packages where my customers can create packages for their customers? (basically can I sell reseller accounts).

yes. You have a full blown cpanel server at your disposal.

What has given you this impression?

- What do I need to do which I didn't with a reseller? - I know already how many more options I have from a standard reseller account, but what from these should I be monitering... and what features should I be used?

Hopefull others who have been in your shoes, and your reading the WHM docs will answer this.

- What is the best thing about VPS for me?

I think you'll have to answer that one :)

Did you read your welcome email? It explains clearly how to get support. This is not a support forum, so don't hold your breath while waiting.

Yes of course. Pricing for extras is on our website, and you can upgrade plans without changing any server configs.

Hehe, thanks for the help guys...

I got the impression that transfering over my reseller accounts would crash the server, I've read alot about VPS and all I hear is problems... I would have to moniter what my users are doing more, and I have some serious customers who would freak if their site was offline... would have to know for sure its secure and the 256Mb of ram could handle it.

Do PowerVPS transfer over free of charge?

I transfered from hostgator to resellerzoom and that was hell.. mainly regarding domain nameservers, and emails... would PowerVPS help with this?

In your opinion... whats best? - Reseller or VPS for security and reliablity for your customers?

There are some things you could do before the transfer such as setting the TTLs to low numbers and then go through each DNS record after the move is complete and replace the HostingZOOM IP with the PowerVPS IP.

PowerVPSes are quite powerful actually, hence the name. If you install things like eAccelerator w/ Zend Optimizer you can really reduce load and increase PHP performance. You can easily use the MySQL query cache to increase MySQL performance. The VPSes already come with APF Firewall and a bunch of other goodies, so they are technically pre-secured and ready to go.

Good luck. Feel free to post on the forums with questions, I'm sure users like me will be glad to give you a hand. But, do note that you should e-mail support@powervps.com for a timely response, of usually under 15 minutes :).

Best,

elix

Not 50 of them no. It's a simple job in WHM and we can assist if you have problems.

Yes we can assist you if you have problems, but DNS propogation can take time and is somewhat out of your control, even after lowering the TTL on your domains. I'd start by reading here and on our KB.

I am biased, but I prefer a VPS.

Remember... with a VPS you become the one in charge of your server... not the person you resell from. If another reseller on your server has a customer that starts sucking up resources and crashes Apache, you're offline till the server owner restarts it.

With a VPS, only you and your customers can crash your server AND if it happens you can restart services or even the entire VPS yourself from the PowerPanel. You can sell reseller space yourself even with a VPS.

With the VPS, you get a GUARANTEED amount of resources.... this does not happen in a shared enviornment. You could end up on a box with 2 other sites or you could end up somewhere with a massive load and tons of performance issues and possibly never get any resources.

So what I would say is try it out first. It's not that hard to get used to running a vps compared to a reseller account. You just have a few more options in your WHM and a lot more access/flexability.
