After getting a cPanel Power 1 package I have been dithering for almost a month on whether to go for it or stick with my reseller package at another host. Knowing little about WHM, the shell and Linux in general it was a big step to take but one that was going to have to happen sooner or later. After doing a lot of reading and a fair amount of experimenting I finally made my mind up to go for it. During this time I discovered that the Virtuozzo backup is my friend as I screwed things up and reloaded the whole account three times. :D

I decided to do it the hard way and do it myself, with support there as a last resort but I managed to update MySQL to 4.1.13, PHP to 4.4 and also updated to the latest version of Zend optimizer. With that under my belt I decided to take the plunge and move my sites, 9 of them in various states of construction. I left the big site til last, a 4GB graphics site with multiple databases and enormous file folders (31,400 images). This was obviously too big for the WHM transfer to work (I did try) so I had to use the shell but after discovering the magic of SCP it was a breeze. I just copied all of the big data folders to a temp folder on the new server, deleted them off the old one and transfered a much reduced site with no problems at all. Then it was a simple matter to move the data folders into the transfered account and change a few paths in the scripts and wait for DNS to propagate. I am very pleased to say that all sites appear to be working as they should and I may even get some sleep tonight. As to whether I would have felt confident enough to try this without the excellent support crew here I have my doubts but its sure nice to have such a great team as backup should I need them. :)
