Basicly I need a straight and simple free software gallery with this specific thing - it needs to have authentication for every user (so no photos are show before logging in) and it needs to have multiple user levels (set by admin). Every user level can acces only a limited set of photos. It would be also nice if upload would extract EXIM data and automaticly generate multiple sizes of photos.

All photos would bear caption and multiple set of tags / keywords.

All uploads need to be approved by the admin who also sets the user levels.

The final part of this app would be done by myself and would include using network MAC addresses as part of the intranet solution for a fairly large non-profit I am working right now...

So is there any possibility that this kind of script would exist already or should I sit down and do some programming ;)

You just named the script "Gallery"

Gallery is a web based software product that lets you manage photo albums on your own website. With Gallery you can easily create and maintain albums of photos via an intuitive interface. Photo management includes automatic thumbnail creation, image resizing, rotation, ordering, captioning, searching and more. Albums can have read, write and caption permissions per individual authenticated user for an additional level of privacy. Give accounts to your friends and family and let them upload and manage their own photos on your website!

Gallery2 (Currently RC1) is the way to go, of course since I am also the author of WPG2 plug-in that embeds Gallery2 content in Wordpress I will freely admit I would not recommend anything else :-)

I would also recommend that you take a "long" look at Coppermine Photo Gallery (http://coppermine.sf.net/) .

I use both Gallery and Coppermine, and I find that Coppermine is easier to configure, maintain and use than Gallery.

And I believe that it will easily meet your requirements that you list.

One function I need is IPTC support which Coppermine has built in. Gallery 1.5x does not have this. But I think Gallery 2 is supposed to have this, but since it's still not released as "stable" version, I have not tried Gallery 2.

Two other "strong" issues with Coppermine is the direct upload from the desktop if you use Windows XP. And a third party plugin for iPhoto on Mac OS X to upload photos to Coppermine.
Very easy for "novice" users to upload images from their computer to a Coppermine Photo Gallery.

And if you have a server with cPanel and Fantastico, you will find both Coppermine and Gallery in Fantastico. But not Gallery 2 yet, since it's still in "beta".

Gallery has a client side applet for easy upload too - works on all platforms.

Yes, Gallery have applet for uploading to your albums.
But I do not see this applet as easy to use for a "average" user as the Windows XP function Coppermine has.
You use "Publish to Web" right in file manager in XP, and despite that I'm a 100% Mac user. I use a XP box when I have more than 3 photos I want to upload to one of my galleries that is running Coppermine, because it's so easy and fast!!

Of course I could use iPhoto, if I was using iPhoto to manage my photos, which I'm not.

I am not trying to disagree with you, but wanted to point out that gallery does have this feature and it works well - ***ON ALL PLATFORMS**. Easy and intuitive are loaded words, so whats easy or intuitive to one is not easy or intuitive to another.

I don't use windows unless I have to either, so an XP plugin means diddly to me, and I am sure a lot of others :)

P.S. When do you ever have less than 3 photos to upload? ;)

I've only managed to locate 2 photos of a Norwegian build T2 fighter from 1928 :(
So less than 3 photos can be very usual for me :p

Not to start a fight here but Gallery2 has a far far far greater feature set against Coppermine.

With Gallery2 you can use the embedded upload applets, upload pages, publish XP options, and very shortly other RPCXML modules as well. Gallery2 works extremely well with eaccelerator, has a very powerful API if you want to extend it's functionality.

Gallery2 comes with a huge slew of external modules, options, including ffmpeg support etc in short I seriously would not install anything else.

Ditto. I use Coppermine all the time and simply love it. As long as you remember to set cd in the image part of the config, everything is pretty straight forth and customizing it is a breeze!
