Dear Valued Customer,
I am writing to you today to announce some exciting happenings around here at Defender Technologies Group, LLC (better known as Defender Hosting and PowerVPS).
First and foremost, I am happy to announce another expansion that we have undertaken. This expansion affects every one of our customers hosted with us out of our Ashburn, VA location.
As you know, our primary hosting operations are based out of the Equinix (http://www.equinix.com) facility in Northern Virginia, with remote operations out of Equinix Chicago and Equinix San Jose. Due to our continued rapid growth, we’ve secured a larger “cage” within the newest Equinix building located on their Northern Virginia campus, known as Building “G”.
We’ve spent over sixty days building out this new cage and getting ready to move our equipment and operations out of the original facility into this new state-of-the-art Equinix facility. The cage will nearly triple our existing capacity and give us plenty of room to continue our expansion plans. We’ve also secured an on-site operations office inside the datacenter that will be used for our NOC operations. Anyone that knows anything about Equinix knows that this is highly sought after real-estate and we are excited to be able to have our NOC operations housed directly inside the Equinix facility.
So, I’m sure you are asking yourself “What does this mean for me?!” It means that:
PowerVPS customers will start to be migrated during the week of October 24th, 2005. We will be moving all PowerVPS customers “across the wire” to hardware nodes that are already running in the new facility. Your downtime should be minimal as we are utilizing Virtuozzo technology that allows us to move a customer’s VPS from node to node with minimal downtime. Nothing will change for you as a result of the move. If you have a VPS with Plesk, cPanel, DirectAdmin, or Webmin, you’ll have the same thing after the migration with all data intact, including your original IP addresses. You will receive an email when the migration of your VPS starts as well as when it completes. During this transition period, we'll be migrating customers literally around the clock to the new facility. Therefore we unfortunately cannot take any special requests or reservations for when a VPS can or cannot be moved. We apologize in advance for this. However as already noted, the downtime should be minimal.
Dedicated and Colocation customers will receive an email the week of October 24th with the date and time of the maintenance window that your server will be physically moved from its original location to the other. We ask that you confirm back to us your receipt of this email. If we do not hear from you within 24 hours from our initial notice, we will attempt to reach you via telephone. Our goal is to minimize the confusion and downtime resulting from the physical move. The target start date for the migrations to start is October 31st, 2005. The process for dedicated and collocation customers will be as follows: At the start of the maintenance window, we will try our best to do a clean shutdown of your server. We will then de-rack it, pack it up with other servers being moved, and then load and re-rack it at the new facility.
All of us here are very excited about the expansion to the new facility, but we understand that we have our work cut out for us in the coming weeks. We also understand that even with the best planning and intentions, things can still go wrong. To attempt to minimize any problems that may arise from the migration, we’ve made a decision to put new orders “on hold” for both the Defender Hosting and PowerVPS brands. As you can imagine, a move of this size requires 100% dedication and concentration by all of our team members. The only thing I want our staff thinking of day and night during this time is continued customer support and making sure the move happens with the least amount of impact to you, our valued customer.
We will have an active thread on our forums where we will post migration schedules and updates that occur, as well as answer any questions that you may have as a result of the migration. Please visit our forums in general at http://forums.defenderhosting.com and specifically this thread http://forums.defenderhosting.com/showthread.php?p=5752 for more information or to ask any specific questions you may have. We will do our best to keep the thread on topic and ask that you not use it as a customer support thread. Instead please submit a ticket to support@defenderhosting.com for dedicated and colocation customers, and support@powervps.com for VPS customers.
In closing, I would like to say “Thank You!” from the entire Defender Technologies Team, for your continued business and support over the years and we look forward to serving you for many years to come!
