SWsoft Announces Virtuozzo for Linux 3.0
22nd December 2005
Features EZTemplate management, 2.6 Linux kernel support, incremental backups and zero downtime migration.
SWsoft, a server virtualization and automation software provider, yesterday announced the release candidate (RC1) of Virtuozzo for Linux 3.0.
The advancements in the Virtuozzo 3.0 for Linux include EZTemplate management, 2.6 Linux kernel support, incremental backups and zero downtime migration. Additional features in the solution include expanded OS support to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.0, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9.0, CentOS 4.0 and Fedora Core 4.0.
"Virtuozzo for Linux 3.0 marks a major milestone in the product's history delivering class-leading innovation to the virtualization market. The entire release reflects major advances in architecture and design that increase performance while minimizing administration and overhead. From smarter template management and expanded OS support to enhanced browser-based management control, Virtuozzo for Linux 3.0 raises the standard for server virtualization," said Carla Safigan, Director of Virtuozzo Marketing, SWsoft.

We already have a test box up running 3.0. :)
My personal favorite features are the zero downtime migrations and the upgrade of the kernel. Good stuff I tell ya.
Yeah knowing Defender's strict and vigorous testing before releasing to customers, we'll "most likely" see it later then other hosts will release it. I cant wait, I dont mind being moved to a 3.0 box to help out the testing.

We don't plan on being slower than other hosts, but it's too early to tell :) We will of course be asking for beta testers, but dont expect that until late next week or the week after.

Not yet, sorry. Ran into a few issues, and it seems SWSoft engineers took some time off for christmas.

Just wanted to give you an update. We ran into some delays and due to the holidays had slow turnaround times. I am taking some time off at the end of the month, so we have decided to delay the beta test till the first week of February, at which time I will post asking for testers.
charles
Hey Charles, be sure to give me a shout when you want testers!
I'd love to see what the new features are, and I'll be willing to write up a full report on my experience, and give you a nice testimonial ;)

We are still doing alot of testing. We're not adding new testers right now as Chalres is on a much needed vacation.
The VZ3 software is still in the release candidate stages, and we've already helped SWSoft fix LOTS of bugs. (That's without even getting super deep into testing, lol.) So it will be a few months before everything is rolled out publically. At least another 2-3 months would be my ROUGH guesstimate.
We'll be looking for more folks to help us test it further later, but I don't know when that will be just yet. We'll speak up here on the forums when that happens though.
Any progress on this, estimates perhaps ;)?

Charles as we know it, is out of the office and getting some RR. I didnt want to bother him to reset/fix the password problem so no VZP yet. I can tell you few new things in it. File Browser. You can edit / make / delete / etc files right in VZP just for quick edits of httpd.conf or php.ini or any file really. There are some limits as the "editor" only accepts certain files, I cant seem to remember what it didnt like. The custom firewall, sw-soft powered not APF. It was interface where you can edit what ports can go in/out, and what IPs to block, and some thing really nice port forwarding.
As promised, Screenshots

Is this going to rolled out Charles over all the VPS's once offically released ? Or will we have to upgrade manually ?
This is upgraded on a per node basis - not per VPS. You actually won't need to do anything personally.

Any ETA on a roll-out? Or is it still too early in the customer BETA test cycle to tell?

Glad you asked as I never got around to posting an update yesterday :)
Our first production class virtuozzo 3.0 server will be ready today! Were going to migrate the current beta testers to it, and still welcome more testers. The free test servers will be good through the end of February.
We have Plesk templates now, so anyone interested in trying a plesk based VPS please sign up.
To specifically address your question, we will have another production class server ready next week for virtuozzo 3.0, and at that time all new orders will be provisioned on 3.0 going forward.
We will be upgrading the existing servers in batches weekly, but due to scheduling conflicts this might only start as late as the 12th of March.

Not too late. Do you have any estimates on how many nodes will be upgraded per week, and in what order.

Not yet. We'll do a conservative number at first, and as we progress probably increase it (or else it will take months to do).
Don't worry, we'll give you advance notice and it should only be about a half an hour more downtime than a normal reboot for a kernel upgrade.

What is the date to start the first upgrades now?
Will you start upgrading in order from 1 - 50 or the other way around, or no special order?

Charles what will PowerVPS be updating just Virtuozzo or both Virtuozzo and the Kernel?

The order we upgrade nodes in are influenced by a number of factors, and it will appear totally random.
We will be sending an email to the people hosted on vz21, vz34, and vz4 notifying them they will be upgraded on Sunday March 12th during our normal maintenance window. Subsequent upgrades will be notified the following Monday.

Both. After the upgrade you will be running a 2.6 kernel.

Ta 2.6 features a number of improvements for the multithreading of the AMD :)

And we will still be running FC 2, correct?

And we will still be running FC 2, correct?
Correct.
The only visible changes should be the 2.6 kernel and some power panel improvements. We expect to get better performance, but that remains to be seen. Our beta testing was not on production hardware, and we only have one production server running virtuozzo 3.0 and thats not enough to throw a party over (but is performing very very nicely).

I thought I'd read somewhere here that once kernel was upgraded to 2.6 we'd be using CentOS not FC?

That would be pretty much impossible as each virtual environment has it's own OS (correct me if I'm wrong) so I would imagine just new VPSes will have CentOs.

Once we have a 2.6 kernel we can support centos-4 which will be the OS we go forward with. There will be no change to your current VPS other than the kernel.
